Christy McIntosh is a professional actress and teacher living in Fairfield County and offering her services as a voice teacher and audition coach. Christy has successfully coached students for everything from local community theater productions to National Tours, signing with agents and https://umarkets.com/ Broadway callbacks! Her credits include Off-Broadway shows (“Evil Dead: The Musical, “Elvis and Juliet” with Fred Willard), regional work (Hartford Stage’s “The Scene” and Barrington Stage’s “Funked Up Fairy Tales” produced by William Finn) and television (“Law and Order: SVU”).

Christy has a gift for assessing the audition situation and coming up with the best material that not only showcases your voice and personality, but makes you stand out from the rest. She is a walking musical encyclopedia and has a knack for unearthing the unknown gem, plus since she’s an actively auditioning and working actress, she has first-hand experience with the current industry climate. I know that I would never try to prepare for an audition alone again! –M.Z., Norwalk, CT
I’m always very nervous when I first start with new coaches, but Christy made me feel comfortable and ready to go. Her lessons were the first where I didn’t feel like I was waiting for a command from the teacher and trying to copy a sound that they made. After lessons with Christy I feel in control over my own voice. Her methods of teaching help you trust yourself as a singer and trust the vocal exercises. –M.S. in NYC
Working with Christy has been great. I still continue lessons with her. Not only have the coachings helped my confidence on stage, but they teach me a lot about what to do and what not to do in an audition room. I used to be nervous and scared at auditions, now I feel excited and confident knowing all the materials that I’ve practiced. We even go over how to walk in and out of an audition room and everything in between. She’s a great coach and friend that anyone can learn a lot from. — J.R., Trumbull, CT

Q Christy, what makes you different from every other vocal coach? What are your qualifications?

A I’m glad that you asked that, Billy. I am an auditioning actress (www.christymcintosh.com), so I definitely know what it is like to audition because I do it every day. I’m also a writer and comedienne, so I tend to approach auditions in a unique way and always look at the comic potential in every piece.

Q Even dramatic pieces?

A Oh no, Billy. I am able to turn my “legit theatre” button on when called for… but one thing that I like to do for a comedic audition is to take a very serious monologue or song and make it funny. For my “Evil Dead” audition, I sang “Your Daddy’s Son” from “Ragtime” to a black baby as I stabbed it with a toy shovel, ripped out its ketchup-stained innards and buried it in coffee grinds. And I got the part. Hooray!

Q I’m looking for a monologue that the casting director will not have heard 1,000 times. Do you know of any?

A Yes! Some of my

favorite audition pieces come from obscure places, like deleted scenes from movies, old sketch comedy shows, and even infamous interviews. Even though every teacher has said never to do this, no casting director has ever been upset. They just laugh. Really hard.

Q I have a callback tomorrow and have no idea how to make this material work. Can you help me?

A Yes, I can, Billy! Don’t worry, we will find what works for you. I will never try to impose my sense of humor on anyone else. We will work together to see what suits you and the character and it will be organic and fun. As a sketch comedy director, I try to observe the performer’s mannerisms and demeanor and work with it to bring out what is funny with what the performer brings to the character naturally.

Hi Christy. Do you do acting lessons for voice over? I have been told that the best way to do good voice over demos is to study some fundamnental acting. What do you think? I have been thinking of VO as a secondary (or second) career. Steve

Hi Christy,

Our neighbors, Claire Regan and her mom, Anne, referred me to you. My daughter Isabel who is 8 years old is interested in auditioning for the Wiz.

Claire has been a mini-mentor for Isabel and has gotten Isabel very excited about being part of a theater production, especially after seeing Claire in Shrek. Isabel performed a short vocal solo last Spring at her elementary school variety show and really came alive in a new and exciting way on stage. She doesn’t take formal voice/theater lessons (yet) so it was a pleasant surprise for us as parents. Isabel did a week of Missoula theater camp over the summer and had a significant role for age. She absolutely loved that experience, especially having it culminate in a performance.

Anne suggested I touch base with you, as Isabel will need help preparing a short piece/sheet music for her audition. This process is all new to us but I’m hoping we can figure it out in the next few weeks. I understand this is a busy time for you as well, but any help or guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

All the best,
Angelique
